In case of Lecherous Nocturne it has defined their existence (or continues to justify it? I’m honestly at a loss which is which at this point). The band’s previous record "The Age Of Miracles Has Passed" was a worthwhile record, if not a very remarkable one. Five years and an almost complete line-up overhaul later they now return with this record. Call them persistent. Playing second fiddle to regional force Nile (and sharing a good deal of membership with them) these guys from Greenville, South Carolina just don’t stop. Ever. This record is Lecherous Nocturne doing what they always did. It’s technical, it has grooves, it has heft and it invites headbanging and footstomping. It’s fast too, but not blindingly so. What it doesn’t invite is replayability - and there’s nothing really memorable about these cuts either. While I enjoy it for what it is, this will not go down as a mandatory release in the genre. That is pretty much what always has troubled Lecherous Nocturne. They are genuinely skilled and can write a song, but they never fully exploit it. No wonder most of these cuts barely reach the 3 minute mark. It would help tremendously if they took these songs and developed them further. The ideas are commendable, that’s a start. A good thing is that you can hear the bass guitar plucking away and the drums sound crushing and powerful for once. So, in all honesty this is exactly what you think it is. An archetypical, early 2000s Unique Leader release with all that entails. It’s exemplary in its field, but that’s about it.
