Lifeless. How original. A quick name search points out that there are, at least, 4 other bands (in Brazil, France, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom) with this name around. So how does one distinguish oneself from the pack and competition in this beloved genre of ours? Does this cover artwork really look a lot like In Flames’ "The Jester Race"? I dunno, I find it eerily similar in construction and composition. Not that Lifeless sounds anything like In Flames, mind you. No, this is Stockholm death metal through and through. I guess now that Dismember has called it quits, Germany’s Lifeless can truly usurp their throne, the masters have bowed out. So what can I say to convey how this record sounds? Well, take Unleashed’s first record "Where No Life Dwells" as a starting point. Add some of that crunch that Dismember is known for, throw in the grooves Grave has made a career out of - and you are about there. The production on this is solid too. Very bass-heavy, that typical concrete Sunlight guitar tone and drums that actually sound like drums (and not like a typewriter, thank Odin for that). In fact, this sounds nothing like the archetypical German death metal sound we have all come to love. Neither does it (surprise) sound like contemporary German death metal, which is a good thing - because a lot of German death metal these days sounds like USDM anyway. So, "Godconstruct", Lifeless obviously aren’t fanatical churchgoers or supporters of organized religion in its many forms and incarnations. Maybe they worship at the altar of the Invisible Flying Spaghetti Monster? Doesn’t really matter. This is good stuff. So, how do I feel about it? It had me tapping my foot and air guitaring at various points, so that’s a plus. If I like it as a jaded and cynical internet critic, the lot of you will probably love this like giddy schoolgirls. Schoolgirls... Yeah, I could use some of those. So pick up this album, whatever it takes to stop you from shelling money out to stupid deathcore bands and the latest moronic slam death sensation. I’ll see you all in the Casket Garden...
