I’m not sure whether I should cheer or cry here. On the hand you got one of Singapore’s earliest and most important metal bands delivering a new album. On the other hand, there’s also that pesky fact that this band has shed its skin so many times and jumped genre so much that it’s hard to tell whether this latest shift is genuine. Be that as it may, Cardiac Necropsy is here and now they play death metal, California style with occult and demonic lyrical themes. Now before you start groaning, this is actually pretty good. Not fantastic, mind you, but comfortably above mediocre and halfway towards decent. Stylistically, this is similar to Severed Savior, Odious Mortem and Brain Drill, with vocals that recall Sven de Caluwé (Aborted). It’s leagues better than the retrospective "Sixxxteen Years Of Anal Addict" compilation from 2008, which constituted their porn/goregrind period. When something isn’t awful does that in turn make it good? Maybe for you, the average fan, but for those longer in the tooth or more discerning in taste, it sounds awfully convenient... and timed. Maybe I should throw my hands up in defeat, and enjoy this for what it is, regardless of context and history. Doing that, this is competently played and nicely produced, but it isn’t something you haven’t heard before (by actual Californian bands, no less). Ignoring that for a moment, "Shayateen" delivers what is says on the tin: occult death metal, California flavored. Maybe I’m just too jaded to enjoy this kind of tripe? Who knows, or cares. Anyway, these Singaporean men have a new album out and its pretty good; that should suffice for the most of you. If you want to hear the genuine article, we all know to which bands and releases you should be listening.
