Sitting in my underground bombshelter with weapons at the ready, I was awaiting the commands of my hellish master. Spiked helmet worn proudly and steel-toed combat boots shining gloriously awaiting imminent bloodshed and destruction. Crackling through my radio the new Denoucement Pyre threw me for a loop. It was not until the title track (the third on the album) that the bombs started falling and the artillery opened fire for real - and it was sounding controlled, dare I say, restrained. Even melody has crept in these songs. Denouncement Pyre hasn’t lost their edge, or venom. They choose to use it more sparingly. At first this might sound disappointing, but in the long run it makes the assault all the more effective. After all, Angelcorpse is no more, and this is the closest we’ll get to that or something resembling Bestial Warlust in any degree. Not that this record comes close to the ferocity and aggression of either of those bands. No, that isn’t the case at all. It’s just different from what you expect to hear. This isn’t balls-to-the-wall aggression and blasting speed anymore, which is strange, considering these are Australians we’re dealing with. When it does blast, it blasts with the best of them. It’s just... after their "World Cremation" debut, you’d reasonably expect them to focus on that. "Almighty Arcanum" is more of the same, but different and more refined. I applaud bands for growing and becoming better, but Denouncement Pyre seem to have focused on the atmosphere and melody with this record, forgetting to keep the pedal to the metal. As things go, this is way better than 85% of the underground and as such it is healthily recommended to fans of the Aussie scene. Just don’t go in expecting a direct sequel to "World Cremation". "Almighty Arcanum" is its own beast and what a behemoth it is!
