What do you get when you throw a bunch of things against the wall, hoping something will stick? Most of the time you end up with an ugly stain on your wall. And ugly is in fact an excellent descriptor for this record, or this band, whichever you prefer. More confused than the average teenager and as deep as a Twilight novel Gravety is a jack of all trades, master of none. Beyond the obvious (the album has the same title as Grave’s 1991 debut and the band’s moniker is almost identical) it goes without saying that this record is terrible. I’m not going to knock on the band for combining random elements of heavy -, thrash - and doom metal on a record. No, that idea actually sounds reasonably exciting. It’s that this stupid band commits the cardinal sin in being just utterly terrible and terribly dull about it. Where’s the fire, guys? Where’s the aggression? Of all the talented outfits working the underground, a couple of dullards like you score a record deal? It makes you wonder on what grounds labels choose their bands. Anyway, none of that matters now. The record is out there and supposedly someone will buy it. So, I guess here is the part where I say that it is all well-played and not too terribly produced. We got that out of the way. The artwork is fishy and from a design point of view, it isn’t the most exciting or good-looking product out there. I suppose the average record buyer doesn’t care about that, but there you have it. There are moments this actually works, but they are too brief to stand out. So, good idea, bad execution. Maybe they’ll get better as they grow along with their audience. Who knows? I hope I won’t be around to hear it.
