Color me surprised. I vividly remember reviewing Katalepsy’s previous release "Triumph Of Evilution", a terrible split album with two equally wretched and pointless slam death metal bands. The very prospect of having to face this band was enough to continue putting off reviewing this album. But miracles occasionally do happen, apparently. This is dense and occult death metal more in the vein of Mithras ("Worlds Beyond the Veil"), Immolation ("Here In After") and Lost Soul ("Chaostream") than anything else. The vocals remind of Mads Haarlov in the Iniquity days. Which is a good thing, let there be no doubts about that. In fact, this is the stuff Unique Leader used to sign en masse back in the salad days of their label. Odin knows why they decided to capitalize so heavily on the deathcore craze. On topic, this is solid through and through, some more solos/leads would have helped tremendously. Also of note is that you can actually hear the bass guitar in the mix, always a plus. This is quite tasty as it is. It also helps that the artwork is actually spooky again, instead of the usual sick and disgusting imagery that somehow has become synonymous with the genre. This is something Dan Seagrave could have conjured up. So, yeah, Mother Russia has delivered another exemplary death metal act here. If only stupid deathcore would die a painful death...
