Why do all these geeky, cute women end up in bands so horrible? Case in point. Italian cheesemasters Levania who are fronted by the beauty that is Elena Liverani. They must really love Theater Of Tragedy, because this has "Aegis" written all over it. Who needs effort when you can just do what somebody else did? I am expecting too much from the underground. Elena Liverani can sing, at least, and she has that ‘come-hither’ look on the album’s sleeve. Not that her range is very impressive, but her cleavage is all the more so. You can see she really wants to be Liv Kristine - or meet her. Really, this is what gothic metal has come to? Limp, sugary background music for the broken-hearted and the dearly departed that has no bite, no impact or mentionworthy aggression to get its point across. By Odin is this inconsequential, fluffy and boring. Can we have some semblance of metal in our gothic metal, please? This stuff is of basic demo level composition. Am I wrong expecting, you know, actually more ambitious songs from a band that somehow managed to score a distribution deal? I can live with the halfway terrible, halfway tolerable glorified demo production, but I listen to terrible music way too often as it is. I imagine the average Epica/Leaves’ Eyes/Sirenia fan wants a more smooth, balanced production job. The thick accents don’t help either, guys. This is why they dubbed Italian movies in the ‘70s and ‘80s, to avoid the stuff happening here in regular clockwork. There’s really minimum effort on all fronts here. Everybody is just phoning it in - or hoping to get into Elena’s pants. Whatever. I’ve so had it with stupid bands like this. The drumming is unimaginative and lazy, the guitars don’t do a lot besides holding the rhythm and the grunts are weak. When in doubt bands like this just chug-chug-chug like it’s 1994. At least the girl is trying, but she’s surrounded by incompetent fuckwits that couldn’t write their way out of a paper bag. Stop it already. So, there you have it. This is gothic metal that is stupefyingly basic and barely passes the marks from any reasonable standpoint, let alone a critical one. There are better things in this genre. If only Elena would realize that...
