Last time I checked Pentagram, Electric Wizard and Bedemon were still around. And no, this is not a quirky tribute to Genesis either, with the oh so clever album title and all. Not that any of that matters. Moonless are a bunch of weedsmokers from Copenhagen, Denmark who do the whole Black Sabbath shtick almost as good as any of the old masters. There’s enough competition in the field, no doubt. Almost every country has at least three bands like this. That is to say, a lot of crap gets released in this genre, without anybody calling the labels out on their part in that particular debacle. "Calling All Demons" is a lot better than it probably is supposed to be, but that says more about the level of ambition of the average stoner rock band, than that it reflects badly upon Moonless. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. I’d rather listen to another Moonless than to another Doomdogs. Both are wholly unnecessary and fairly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but the former is definitely leagues above and beyond than the latter. Even though the latter had one member that actually at one point was in an extreme metal band of relevance. Those are semantics, and who cares about those anymore? The lot of you will probably like this just the same. I’m not complaining, just saying. There’s good stoner doom out there - Moonless is one of them. Buy this record and shut up.
