Why death metal (or any other metal genre for that matter) needs a plethora of prefixes these days is something I’ll never understand. Are people truly unable to think for themselves, or is it just old-fashioned laziness? Whatever it is, it isn’t helping the genre. Take "brutal" death metal, for example, isn’t that an oxymoron? Death metal, by its very nature and design, is brutal - so an additional prefix indicating such a thing is moot. Pure Evil must feel the same way, because this is just death metal, no prefixes included or needed. This is death metal the way it is supposed to be played. Dark, brooding, ominous with no care of being technical, the most downtuned or the fastest on the block. As this is a Hammer Of Hate release, an undercurrent of black metal (and much of its related imagery) is expected. In fact, I guess you could this primitive in a way. Everything about this album is about reducing things to their basics. There’s a select number of riffs, the drumming is functional, but not really doing anything besides holding down the beat. This is quite reminiscent of early Swedish death metal and early Bathory if you want a black metal comparison. As always this is executed exemplary with the typical Finnish finesse. So, yeah, black/death metal that is equal parts of each genre. It won’t win any prices for originality, nor will it turn any people into converts upon hearing - but in a genre where mediocrity and wretchedness reign supreme, it is good having bands like Pure Evil who remind us why we liked this genre in the first place.
