Rings Of Saturn’s label debut was a lot like going into a merry-go-round and looking really hard into a stroboscope with a major hangover. Sure, it was impressive on a technical level, but it made you sick to your stomach and it really wasn’t all that good once the novelty factor wore off. You all know the story by now, right? A bunch of kids form a band in high school, self-release an album (which they did or didn’t cheat on recording) and get picked up by prestigious local label. Said band goes on tour and implodes with a lot embarrassing man-drama and hilarity ensueing. No, I wasn’t talking about Brain Drill. Anyway, 3/4th of the last album’s line-up isn’t present here, so this is basically a new unit. Not that that changes a whole lot, musically. This still is spastic, wholly technical deathcore with more guitar wankery than an Yngwie Malmsteen record and irritating sound effects that border on videogame territory. Yeah, it’s impressive from a technical standpoint. It’s also annoying, and grating if you have a soft spot for some semblance of song structure and overall coherence. I actually liked Rings Of Saturn’s debut, although it isn’t the record to promote replay value. In fact, that is the very bane of this band’s existence. Everything is so over-the-top, so busy, so wanky and self-absorbed that it makes you wonder whether this was meant to be an album or a demonstration of whoever plays on this record. They can play, they can play fast and with a lot of notes and crazy dynamics - but what about songs, friends? I hear tons of riffs and schizophrenic arrangements, but where are the songs? Maybe I’m just grumpy and old, asking for songs and things to remember afterward? So, yeah, "Dingir" is equally impressive as it is annoying and self-centered. The artwork is pretty neat, though. Now I want to fire up good old DOOM and hear spooky songs while shooting zombies and hellish fiends in the face.
