We all know how dull and stagnant death metal is these days. Just like videogame publishers and developers the very idea of steering away from the status-quo and proven successful idioms and properties in order to forward the medium is a frightening notion. Our genre isn’t much better, or all that different when it comes right to it. Therefor it is good to have bands like Savage Annihilation, who take a known quantity and spice it up in their own way. "Cannibalism, heresy and other savagries" - it could be the subtitle to an essay about death metal subject matter. As you’ve probably guessed by now this is a French death metal act and what they play is both modern and traditional at the same time. On the one hand this has a heavy "Tomb Of the Mutilated" era Cannibal Corpse vibe with a nod to "Mutilate, Decapitate, Eviscerate" era Flesh Consumed. Now when I think of France I usually link it to Audrey Tatou and "Amélie", but maybe that’s just me. Anyway, this is very ‘90s in mindset (thankfully) and while far from original, it at least reminds you again why you started listening to this genre in the first place. It’s reasonably fast with enough interesting rhythms, chord progressions and shredding leads/solos that swing like there’s no tomorrow. The vocals aren’t very special and the drumming is more in tradition of Steve Asheim and Aantar Lee Coates than of worthy sticksman as Pete Hammoura, Hannes Grossman or Tony Laureano. So, yeah, this is good stuff alright. When something is this solid, there isn’t a whole lot to say.
