Seamount is another disciple of doom sprung up in response to the questionable popularity of the horrible and overrated Ahab. This unit is more in the tradition of Candlemass, Cathedral and Solitude Aeturnus than that of maretime band. So, no, there isn’t anything remotely novel to be found here. It is also surprisingly traditional without any psychedelia or other narcotic fueled excesses. In a lot of ways this is similar to Mirror Of Deception and Dawn Of Winter. So, yeah, Seamount is reasonably competent and there’s a good schwung to their songs, but is that enough for you? If you feel that this is something you’ve heard before, then you’re correct. Not that novelty is required, it tends to bring out the worst in people. No, "Earthmother" is competent enough, not very threatening, morose or heavy even. It just sort of exists, and that’s about it. It’s all here: acoustic bits, a little organ, some piano, uptempo riffing for the headbangers. The softest material borders on power ballad territory that a Seattle grunge act would write in the ‘90s. It’s just all very casual, so very vanilla, so without bite. I’m not sure what the sales pitch on this is supposed to be. Apparently someone must be buying these records because they continue to put them out with regular intervals. So, this doom metal is neither heavy, nor very morose sounding - that leaves the traditional metal fans to pick up the slack. I guess that’s what this is, uptempo doom metal for heavy metal maniacs. Why was this released again?
