Ah, Sweden. Always so reliable to deliver the goods in whatever genre you ask for. Truth be told, I’d rather hook up with the girls from Baskery - but that isn’t going to happen, right? So, that leaves us with the ugly men from Spawn Of Possession... or what’s left of it, anyway. What do you call a band of which only 2/5th is original? Reformed, or burnt out? I don’t know, but this band certainly isn’t the first to see such a huge overhaul in personell. It hasn’t hurt their output, I can tell you that much. Jonas Bryssling (lead/rhythm guitars) and Dennis Rondüm (vocals, former drums) are the only remaining members, tagging along are Norwegian bassist extraordinaire Erlend Caspersen (ex-Blood Red Throne), German rhythm/lead guitarist Christian Muënzer (Obscura) and new skinsman Henrik Schönström. We all know these fellows can play their instruments, and from a technical standpoint this record is absolutely jawdropping and super duper impressive. More important, though, are the songs - and this is where it gets... long-winded. Not long-winded in the sense for me to explain it in layman terms for you, no. If only it were that simple. No, these tracks just are long, and I mean, really long. 8-9 minutes each, easily. The question you have to ask yourself is this: do you listen records for the songs or for the amount of notes, solos, tempo changes and riffs? I know my choice, you make yours. This stuff is really long, and while impressive on many fronts; sometimes I just want a song, you know? So, yeah, Spawn is back, and they write really, really difficult tracks with really, really long running times. Is it good? No doubts there. Would some editing have helped? Tremendously. Now, where’s that "Cabinet" CD again?
