There’s nothing like a good trend to push another unnecessary record on the hipster masses. Acid Witch is an American/Finnish trio, consisting of two unknowns and one Lasse Pyykkö who made a dent in the underground scene with their witchcraft (and narcotic abuse) based traditional doom metal. Apparently the whole witchcraft shtick must have been the selling point, because the psychedelic doom they peddle is far from original or innovating. Never mind the obvious fact that UK doomsters Cathedral and Texan doom monarchs Solitude Aeturnus did this thing in the early 1990s much better and more convincing, without the need for a gimmicky concept. "The Ethereal Mirror" and "Into the Depths Of Sorrow" is where Acid Witch liberally borrows (no, steals) from - it is surprising how little fans and critics have picked up upon this fact. "Witchtanic Hellucinations" was originally released by once-goregrind/gore-thrash specialist label Razorback Records, but is now re-issued by Hells Headbangers who have a knack for anything remotely resembling old school - and traditional metal in its various forms. This was incidentally also the last record to feature Lasse Pyykkö (of current hot commodity Hooded Menace), who jumped ship to create his own offshoot of this band. Acid Witch is far from revolutionizing the doom metal genre, no matter what the label wants you to believe. In all honesty, there is far better doom out there than this. It is a good place for neophytes to start off their doom journey - but that’s about it.
