In times where anything and everything is considered historically important when it comes to reissues - it is good to have a release like this. Beherit is one of the cult names of the Finnish black metal scene. Their earliest releases are benchmarks of the genre and an inspiration to many. Even though Beherit’s descent into ambient was questionable, their more recent output is in the old primitive black metal tradition. Originally meant to be Beherit’s debut, this record was shelved indefinitely due to troubles with their then-label Turbo Music. Many consider "The Oath Of Black Blood" to be this band’s debut, but the recent resurfacing of this material through drummer Jari Pirinen is evidence to the contrary. We now know that "At the Devil’s Studio 1990" predates that release by a whole year. As this was Beherit in their most crude, embryonal and formative stage it is to be expected that this material is underdeveloped, raw and minimalist - even for their standards. As one of Finland’s earliest black metal exports the historical value of this recording alone is worth the price of admission. "At the Devil’s Studio" betrays a clear influence from the like of earliest Bathory, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost and UK bruisers Venom. As expected the recording is shoddy sounding at best, but given the time - and financial constraints there’s a crude charm about this unearthed recording. Those wanting to explore and discover the earliest beginnings of Finnish black metal will find a lot of value in this record. The actual historical value of this recording is an entirely different discussion, while its sheer importance for the development of the genre it helped shape remains unquestioned to this day.
