The resurgence of retro-death metal continues to allow perfunctory releases to be distributed globally. Daemonicus is another throwback band to the Stockholm sound of yesteryear. "Deadwork" is the follow-up to 2009’s "Host Of Rotting Flesh" (which flew completely under the radar, mostly) and it sounds exactly as you think it does. There is nothing exactly wrong with this release, but one has to question why exactly this is receiving worldwide distribution - as the original bands who pioneered this sound are still around and very much alive. With dedicated retro-acts like Bloodbath, Brutally Deceased, Fatalist and Maim flying the flag high for Stockholm death metal - and icons such as Grave, Necrophobic, Ribspreader and Unleashed still carrying on with their original mission, there’s no valid excuse to rationalize the existence of this particular record. But, for those of you who haven’t heard this particular subgenre yet, this is textbook Stockholm death. Very much crunchy all around with enough velocity and a healthy dose of bass-presence, but without the great hooks and memorable arrangements of the classic acts of this genre. The stunning artwork by Daniel Devilish (Those Who Bring the Torture) is a nice complementary bonus. It isn’t exactly the greatest thing or especially impressive considering the oversaturation of copycat bands in about any continent of your choosing/liking. Good for what it is, but necessary?
