On "Painted By Pain" Russian six-piece Harmony In Grotesque take a stab at atmospheric dark/death metal. The result is a worthwhile effort that won’t turn too many heads into their direction, but is solid enough for what it is. As with many underground acts the arrangements aren’t yet on the level of the masters of this genre. What they lack in memorable arrangements they complement in heaviness and an abundance of atmosphere. ‘Aegrimonia Profunda’ starts off the record on a high note with fragile acoustics guitars and some very effective drum patterns. It is the kind of instrumental piece you’d expect to find on a Swedish death metal record of the mid 1990’s. The death metal is mostly of Swedish variety, with riffing recalling early At the Gates. The keyboards and synthesizers are minimal and only serve to support. The vocals are a combination of grunts and emotional cleans. Minor similarities could be drawn to My Dying Bride as this band also uses the violin and sparse female vocals to accentuate the somber atmosphere. Overall, Harmony In Grotesque is far more death metal than pure, all-out doom as the songs are quite dynamic and twist and turn venomously. Vocally, there are similarities with early Callenish Circle (circa "Drift Of Empathy") The strong feat of this unit is how seamlessly they segue between harsh and calm sections. These calm sections are a major selling point as they feature prominently and are the highpoint of this release.
