...Filthy Porn & Psycho For the Decadent (EP)

Wydane przez Stone Stallion RexRok wydania Kraj GermanyNapisał Wouter5Komentarze (0)Yes, apparently there’s a market for this stuff still. Not content that the airwaves are still dominated by too much inconsequential fluffy folk/retro rock (Kings Of Leon, Beirut, Mumford & Sons, etc) here’s another bunch of hipster douchebags putting out a record that nobody in the right mind asked for. This EP consists of 4 tracks of competent, unassuming and completely tripped out stoner rock in vein of The Queens Of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath, (later) Corrosion Of Conformity, Kyuss, Pod People and Blind Dog. The problem is not so much the execution, which is exemplary, but the fact that it is just thoroughly unnecessary. All elements are accounted for, though. Pianos, organs, the smoked out atmosphere, the Southern rock boogie and borrowed bouncy guitar riffs that chug like there’s no tomorrow. The band probably had a good time recording this. Smoking weed, downing six-packs of beers while wearing their cowboy hats as they were plucking away at their instruments and writing lyrics about all the dumb girls they slept with. Frankly, in 2013 it takes more than a clever marketing ploy to launch your stupid band. Not that this EP is abysmally bad, no, far from it. It’s just so... calculated, so safe, so hopelessly inoffensive. Wasn’t heavy rock supposed to be rebellious? When did it all become so toothless and sanitized? The main bone of contention is the dreadful vocal style that adorns this record. Stoner rock needs a wide range vocal style, something that Jim Grant just doesn’t possess no matter how hard he tries. The psychedelic ‘60s/’70s artwork is fantastic, recalling the album covers of The Black Crows, Slade, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, etc. The EP also comes with a fold-out poster with a drawing of the sassy girl on the cover. This EP is something you’ve heard before, sometimes better, sometimes not. It all boils down to one’s tolerance level for lowbrow stoner rock and whether or not you consider we need another of these here-today/gone-tomorrow bands around. I’ll just stick to my Jimi Hendrix record collection and listen to the real thing instead. Now go back to where you came from and take your smelly friends with you...
