Midnight is a black-ish heavy/speed metal act from Cleveland, Ohio that is the answer to Japanese heavyweights Abigail, Metalucifer and Barbatos or European icons such as Iron Maiden. Since "Satanic Royalty", their debut for Hells Headbangers, has become somewhat of an underground classic the label is now reissuing all of the band’s pre-"Satanic Royalty" demo material in a convenient compilation. This revised compilation includes the debut self-titled EP (later dubbed "Funeral Bell"), the "White Hot Fire" single, and assorted unreleased tracks and rarities. Where this reissue truly differs is with the inclusion of the "Farewell to Hell" EP, documenting Midnight’s pre-"Satanic Royalty" material. In all, Midnight hasn’t changed too much over the years, although it is clear that early on this unit was meant to be a fun project. Moreso than their "Satanic Royalty" debut the material here is pure traditional metal worship, whereas the later debut had Midnight opting for a sound of its own within that framework. This will be interesting for the die-hards and completists of the band. Others might just enjoy it a steady helping of no-frills, straightforward traditional metal compilation. Hopefully this will help turning more people into Midnight converts, as they are one of the more promising outfits under the Hells Headbangers banner.
