Not only content to be the cradle of communism, the home of cheap looking pornography, Russia is now also becoming more of a force in extreme metal. Although Russia is primarily identified with black - and pagan metal death metal is steadily on the rise. Pseudogod formed in 2004 and now releases their debut after a slew of locally released demos. "Deathwomb Catechesis" is filled to the brim with dense hateful and ominous sounding occult death/black metal in the tradition of (early) Immolation, Incantation, Morpheus Descends and Drawn and Quartered with echoing primal growls and ungentle, hateful riffing of the purest kind. It’s good to see this type of death metal make a welcome return. Together with acts like Dead Congregation, Derkéta, Disma, Father Befouled, Profanatica, Funerus and Hellvetron this type of murky, dense and occult sounding death metal is now more needed than ever. As a counter-reaction towards most of today’s flat and clinically impotent death metal, this is actually very refreshing. Not that it will revive this particular strain of death metal as a whole. Don’t kid yourself. The fantastic cover artwork was drawn by Antichrist Kramer, who’s somewhat revered for his work with Colombian occult metal act Inquisition. It’s hard to imagine if this band will ever be able to rise out of the underground, but if it does so much the better. Not that anybody is counting on that ever happening. We’ve all been down that road before. Just be sure to pack enough of your medicine, cos it tends to get dark, suffocating and claustrophobic whenever bands like this are around.
