On their second record for Ibex Moon Records Chicago death metal combo Cardiac Arrest have upped the ante considerably. The riffing is reminiscent of a heavier Dismember while the dual vocal approach is far more modern sounding. With a new drummer inducted to their line-up the battery style is obviously different sounding, but far more versatile and violent than those of their "Haven For the Insane" debut. There’s a definite crunch and old school charm to their delivery and execution, although "Vortex Of Violence" is far more modern sounding than their preceding record. Notably is the increased reliance on blasting speed and high velocity violence. With a few well-placed slow creeping death/doom cuts there’s plenty of variation to be found on the record. Another traditional death metal trait that Cardiac Arrest take great pride in are guitar leads/solos and "Vortex Of Violence" is a feast to behold in that regard. This is pure death metal in every respect. In today’s scene of core-isms and overbearing technicality a band like Cardiac Arrest take the genre back to its roots. This is well played, well written death metal of an older generation. Cardiac Arrest care not about outdoing contemporaries in terms of number of notes played, or how fast they can play. No, they concentrate above all else on writing dark, ominous sounding death metal the way it was played in the early to mid 1990’s. Where many younger bands fail to do anything else but duplicate their inspirations Cardiac Arrest wow their audience with their sincere and honest approach to a genre overrun by hipsters and douchebags. Ibex Moon Records once again proves why the old guard remains relevant despite their advancing age. Scream bloody gore!
