Split albums aren’t a new venture in the metal world. The underground spews these things out on a regular basis from a variety of artists and across many genres. "An Introduction To the Black Arts" is a split compiling two up-and-coming doom metal acts. Cough sound like Burning Witch and Khanate. Reverb, feedlack laden bass-heavy doom metal with the expected Black Sabbath riffing and wailing, tortured sounding shrieks. Occasionally the singer will break into normal singing. The tripped out solo’ing is a definite highlight. The Wounded Kings sound like Black Sabbath and Pentagram, with restrained emotive singing, gargantuan riffing and occult sounding church organs. Of the two acts present The Wounded Kings is the most convincing, although both participants sound very accomplished in their own right. Each band contributes a single track, but with each contribution clocking around 15 to 20 minutes, it is well worth hearing in its entirety. There isn’t a whole lot to say about this release, other than that Black Sabbath-ian doom fanatics will absolutely love this split. The cover art by Dennis Mahlmeister perfectly fits this release and hopefully we’ll see more of his art in the future.
