The resurgence of all things retro-thrash seems unstoppable. "Onwards To the Pits" is exactly the kind of release one would identify with Hells Headbangers. Like label mates Children Of Technology and Drünken Bastards, this is another throwback record to a sound of years past. Not that Deathhammer is particularly known or different sounding from many of their contemporaries. No, Deathhammer are perhaps more famous for their logo’s appearance on the cover artwork of Darkthrone’s "FOAD" record, than any of their recorded output. That fact should have your alarmbells ringing. "Onward To the Pits" delivers exactly what it says on the tin. This is filthy and barbaric black/thrash that is equal parts "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" era Mayhem, as they are influenced by Venom, Slayer, Motörhead and Bathory. In that sense Deathhammer does stand out from its peers, their sheer level of raw energy and fiery enthusiasm for the genre is matched by few. One thing that many retro-thrash efforts lack it atmosphere. Deathhammer has that in spades through the use of tolling funeral bells, church organs and well-placed leads/solos. All things considered this is a release worthy of your time, although one can always wonder when a fad will finally die out...
