What do you get when you throw "Left Hand Path", "Where No Life Dwells" and "Mindloss" into a blender? Somehing called Funeral Whore. What this old school Swedish death metal act from Holland does certainly isn’t new, but it is effective. Much like their contemporaries in Brutally Deceased, Fatalist, Maim and Massive Assault they combine crunchy Stockholm death metal with the slower ominous passages of Gorefest’s underrated and little heard debut. The guitar tone replicates the Sunlight Studio sound of old, while the bass guitar features prominently. The bass lines follow the guitar riffs almost to a fault, but would be more engaging if they did more beyond slavishly doubling the riffs. The drumming has little in the way of complexity, but is so much better for it. The nostalgia factor comes into play in no small way when listening to this record. The old school death metal resurgence continues and Funeral Whore is no different. There’s no doubt that "Step Into Damnation" wasn’t just meant as an extended love note to this band’s ancient European (Holland, Sweden and Finland, mainly) masters. Taken at face value "Step Into Damnation" is yet another throwback death metal record. It is a lot more enjoyable than other similar projects, because one can hear Funeral Whore love what they do and they aren’t some one-record project. Hopefully they’ll individualize their sound a bit more in the future. An enjoyable record for what it is, but hardly a mandatory one.
