Nattfog is a relatively young black metal collective hailing from the Kymenlaakso region of Finland. The Finnish album title translates roughly to ‘the black sun was enough to’, while the oddly chosen Norwegian band moniker means ‘nightfog’. The duo present a more primitive, bass-heavy and thoroughly more old school strain of black metal, linking themselves with the likes of (early) Burzum, Satanic Warmaster, Sargeist, Horna, a less death metal oriented Archgoat and "Deathcrush" era Mayhem. The raspy hisses are fitting evil sounding and the drumming is as minimal as is expected. ‘Kosmisen Usvan Ympäröimänä’ and ‘Kaksitoista Askelta Luvattuun Valtakuntaan’ are moody midtempo instrumental tracks that ooze an atmosphere of cold somberness, the latter being reminiscent of the folk sections from Satyricon’s ‘Dominions Of Satyricon’ and their ‘I En Svart Kiste’. Other than that this is rather typical of the depressive, suicidal black metal substyle popularized by the likes of Striborg, Nortt, Forgotten Tomb and Xasthur. Nattfog isn’t especially poignant or ineffective within the parameters of this substyle, everything is functional to say the least. As such this is a decent enough record for fans of this style, everybody else is up for debate.
