When does imitation and hero worship become embarrassing? Torn the Fuck Apart are about as subtle as a kick to the groin in both their moniker and this debut album. Hailing from Kansas City they seem to go for broke in imitating local heroes Origin and its offshoot Unmerciful. The music of this disc seems to imitate the style and direction of Origin in their "Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas" and "Echoes Of Decimation" era, along with some groove sections and breakdowns for good measure. The blatant abuse of samples from television shows, documentaries, and movies add nothing to the music and only serve to annoy. Samples can be effective when used sparsely and intelligently – throwing in a bunch of samples to hide faulty songwriting only exposes that key error more clearly. The band throws in (seemingly at random) a couple of bass drops to make their cuts stand out. This would have been more effective had they been placed more strategically. The tracks bounce and stutter around in a fairly accomplished manner, but nothing ever stands out. This is obvious because there’s already an established and wider known unit perfecting this particular niche, namely: Origin. The vocals are actually pretty good, and would fit better in a slower, doom-laden Incantation sort of death metal act. The band is no slouches on their instruments and the bass-heavy production is effective. The drums are triggered too much (for my taste) and the guitar tone could use more crunch. The biggest flaw of Torn the Fuck Apart is their thorough lack of identity and individuality. Why would anyone be interested in another Origin clone, as the original entity and its offshoot Unmerciful are still around? The mind boggles.
