Up until a few years ago Semargl was an unremarkable black metal band from Ukraine. Shifting styles a few times during the course of four previous albums the band now arrive at "Satanic Pop Metal". Has it come to this? A HIM version of melodic black metal. Really? Despite their black metal image (corpse paint, bullet belts, spikes, pentagrams, etc) what this record offers is nothing but pedestrian and watered down melodic metal of the worst kind. This is more style over substance. Everything is focused around cheap thrills. Chugging riffs, big pop hooks, female backing vocals, cheesy synthesizers and easily degistable song structures. As if that weren’t enough to insult anyone with a functional brain, the band throw in faux-lesbian histrionics, would-be erotica and vampy, half-naked women to sell their wares to an audience that can’t tell their heads from their tails. Everything about this record is aimed at sexually frustrated 14 year olds. Cheap tittilation with no verifiable substance. Semargl aim straight at your crotch, please leave your brain at the door. The artwork, promo videos, booklet design overflow with scandily clad females in suggestive poses. Just look at the cover artwork and decide whether you’d be able to pick this up with a straight face. Of all things it looks like a dime-a-dozen dance compilation that record stores (remember those, kids?) stock on all year around. As expected is the production smooth and pristine to the widest extent, as per pop standard. "Satanic Pop Metal" is exactly what it title implies. A record aimed at the lowest common denominator. This is metal for people who don’t like metal, but wish to express their rebellious tendencies in a market-calculated effort for peer acceptance. Unless you wish to inflict harm on your sanity or those around you, stay as far away from this as humanly possible.
