French death metal combo Gorod has been steadily on the rise since their 2005 Deadsun Records debut “Neurotripsicks”. “Leading Vision” - the band’s second record, their first for Willowtip Records and the last to feature female drummer Sandrine - set a new standard for the underground. “Process Of A New Decline” followed in 2009. “A Perfect Absolution” starts off with a deceptive orchestral segment leading one to think that we’re dealing with a Fleshgod Apocalypse clone. Gorod follows clearly in the lineage of technical death metal institutions like (early) Decapitated, Necrophagist, Obscura and Spawn Of Possession. While the compositions are jagged and jumpy cohesion is never lost. It also helps that Gorod are not afraid to tackle slow material and make the bass guitar integral to their compositions. The riff set is reminiscent of Theory In Practice, while the overall delivery is akin to Spawn Of Possession and Necrophagist. Overall “A Perfect Absolution” is a competent modern day death metal record on all fronts. The vocals are more shouted and screamed than grunted, but aren’t much of a hinderance. There isn’t a whole lot to say about Gorod or this record as it is splendidly executed all around. The manga-esque artwork isn’t very fitting, but one can assume that it ties into the record’s overall concept. Guest solos by Christian Muenzer (Obscura, Spawn Of Possession) and Michael Keene (The Faceless) help in terms of marketability.
