Rogga Johansson (Bloodgut, Bone Gnawer, Demiurg, The Grotesquery, Megascavenger, Paganizer, Putrevore, Revolting, Ribspreader, Swarming, The 11th Hour) shows no signs of slowing down. “Lullabies For the Deranged” is the third and final album of Those Who Bring the Torture and their first for their current contractor, before disbanding in 2010. Being as industrious as he is, there are no surprises to be found on this record. This is more of the typical crunchy Johansson-sound. The early records of Dismember, Entombed, Necrophobic, Unleashed and Grave are the clearest of influences in this Stockholm throwback record. Johansson has a serviceable grunt with the occasional shriek thrown in for good measure. Commonalities with Deicide are apparent. It’s surprising that Johansson continues to be so productive, considering the many releases he churns out every single year. One has to wonder when the well of creativity will run dry or when the man will hit the inevitable writer’s block due to such enormous output. On a traditional death metal record like this the last thing you’d expect is a WASP cover. To say that ‘Love Machine’ sticks out like a sore thumb would be an understatement. The bass-heavy production is expectedly solid without becoming too clean, sterile and pristine. The artwork by Daniel Devilish is eye-catching in its deceptive simplicity.
