Kaos hail from Oakland, California (not to be mistaken with similar named acts from Brooklyn, New York and Texas) and have been around since 1987. They are one of the originators of the genre and their determination and longevity certainly commands respect. After a slew of demos and three full lengths Kaos now present their new EP “Validated In Blood”. Four tracks plus a cover of Vio-Lence track ‘Kill On Command’ make up this EP. When a band remains in obscurity for this long (three decades) there’s probably good reason for that. Kaos are exactly the type band you can see anywhere in the world, in your local pub or metal club. This is the type band that will forever be relegated to opening act despite having a decent skill set and having obvious affection for what they do. And that’s what my biggest gripe with this EP is, this is vintage retro thrash by the hands of one of its originating bands – yet despite the legendary and pioneering connotations that Kaos is, there isn’t a whole lot of interesting things to be heard here. The retro-thrash craze is (thankfully) slowly tarnishing and Kaos just aren’t special enough to warrant anything more than a cursory glance and a commending nod. The crunchy production has that old school charm, lying somewhere between Machine Head’s “Burn My Eyes” and Metallica’s “Kill ‘em All”. “Validated In Blood” will probably appeal to old school thrashers and genre neophytes. The rest of us have heard this thing too many times before to remain genuinely excited about it.
