Lloyd Nelson is perhaps most famous for being the replacement singer in reformed Atlanta, Georgia rap-metal pioneer act Stuck Mojo (who originally broke up in 2000). Working together with French act Lies (who function as his backing band) Nelson now presents his first solo effort. Nelson’s vocals and raps remind of Clawfinger’s Zak Tell. The songs alternate between heavier cuts and more introspective meanderings. Musically commonalities with Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, “Burning Red”/”Supercharger” era Machine Head, Clawfinger and Stuck Mojo are hard to avoid. There isn’t anything particularly outstanding about “Fight” since this peculiar sound was perfected in the late 1990s and has since then thankfully died out. Nelson’s vocals are commendable but isn’t quite on par in regard to verbosity, rhymes and flow when compared to the rappers from Cypress Hill or House Of Pain. Lies, as a band, consists of seasoned musicians who play his material with gusto, finesse and expertise – yet left to their own devices they’d be able to produce from interesting material. Introduction track ‘The Lord’ features some soothing frail riffing and an atmosphere that isn’t matched anywhere else on the record. Given that this subgenre of music was last revelant over a decade ago, it’s hard to imagine that there’s a massive marketshare and audience for this record. The packaging is typical of the genre, including the expected The Godfather-font type logo and Nelson’s mug gracing the cover. In all this has more the stylings of a rap record than that of a heavy rock record. Nevertheless, the album succeeds in what it sets out to do. Stuck Mojo and Nelson fans might find this of interest, everbody else is up to debate.
