Nacht is a German doom/black metal act, which prior released a two-track demo tape in 2010 (a practice far more common in the ‘80s-‘90s). “The Cold Eerie Moon” is a single track EP, lasting little under half an hour. While the instrumentation is quite basic the atmosphere is abundant and impressive considering a duo is behind it. Drummer Baal (who also operates the Dunkelheit label imprint) isn’t going to impress anybody in terms of skill, but his ominous ritualistic drumming does provide a martial feeling to this otherwise serviceable doom/black metal package. While the tempo is kept obviously low there’s enough variation in terms of riffing, percussion and general dynamics to keep this single cut interesting through out. The skincrawling atmospheric ambient segments are similar to what Belgian occult death metallers Emptiness did on their demos and first full lenght release. This is an avenue that Nacht should consider further exploring and more fully incorporating into their assault, as it is definitely promising. The production is sparse and quite minimal, true to its black metal foundation. Nacht does very much with relatively few means, as a black/doom hybrid it is among the more accomplished units. Germany has a interesting and diverse underground black metal scene and Nacht are another potent example of that. With some additional finetuning plus a more earthy, organic and balanced production they might deliver their breakout record in a few years.
