Debuting in 2001 with “In Obscure Depths” (on LSP Company, a precursor of their current label) Panchrysia had the image of latter-day Emperor and Zyklon. In the years since their debut Panchrysia has adopted a more typical black metal look, although the neutral look prevails in this album’s booklet. Maarten ‘Zahrim’ Geens’ vocals these days remind of Ihsahn on the last two Emperor records. ‘The Praise Of the Folly’ channels the spirit of (pre-“Volcano”) Satyricon in its moody midpaced sections and its prominent bass lines. Notable is that Panchrysia plays a whole lot slower and more dissonant compared to their early - and demo days. Not the Blut Aus Nord or Immolation type dissonance, but this record is far less reliant on speed and visceral impact than many of their underground brethren, and is better for it. One that remains intact is this band’s quirky nature. Be it through the glorious solo’ing, sparse use of acoustics, effects used on various instruments, a well-placed sample or just the way certain melodies unfold, this is vintage Panchrysia. In all Panchrysia of today sounds somewhat similar to current day Enthroned (“Tetra Karcist”, “Pentragrammaton”) musically, although lyrically they are vastly different. The persistent slower nature of these cuts allows an atmosphere of darkness and desolation to prevail while retaining the band’s signature foreboding melodies, inspired but controlled drumming and vocal acrobatics.
