Embalming the Nazarene ()

Costa Rica isn’t the place one typically associates with extreme metal, let alone pure Florida death metal, of the old variety. Mummified combine the sounds of early Death ("Scream Bloody Gore", "Leprosy") with the general delivery and compositional simplicity of "From Beyond" era Massacre, while some of slower, more ominous passages recall (early) Morbid Angel. The hateful riffing and creepy melodies certainly add a lot of atmosphere. The drum programming is poor and very unnatural in sound. The ghoulish vocals remind of Belgian black metallers Ancient Rites circa "The Diabolical Serenades". Overall these compositions aren’t fully developed enough, the dynamics are shoddy and there isn’t a whole lot of flow to this record. It would help this band tremendously if they would take a look at some of the classic Florida practitioners, as far as song composition goes. These cuts bounce, jumble and stutter in all directions, but there’s no structural cohesion to them. ‘Ferocious Godsodomy’ is probably the most accomplished cut of the album, channeling the spirit of early Sinister ("Cross the Styx") in its faster sections. The addition of a human drummer (something which the booklet alludes to) would certainly help making Mummified more organic and natural sounding. As per usual there’s a bunch of samples sprinkled through the album, but these put in no additional value whatsoever and are better abandoned on future records. "Embalming the Nazarene" is in essence a reasonably produced demo recording, plain and simple, with all productional defects and artistic shortcomings that entails. If Mummified is an indication of the state of the Costa Rican underground scene – they still have a long, long way to go before they can measure themselves with the American (North, Central, South) and European scenes.
