Alghazanth is one of the early symphonic black metal acts from Finland and while their sixth record “Vinum Intus” doesn’t deviate too much from the expected standards, it’s clear that this is an experienced unit albeit not a very inventive one. Shades of Emperor, Hecate Enthroned, Immortal and (early) Dimmu Borgir are expected, but it is also immediately clear that Alghazanth aren’t quite as thick on the synthetics and synthesizers compared to other acts within this genre. The use of melody, acoustics and chord structures betray a closer relation to second wave acts of the Norwegian and Swedish black metal scenes rather than the more typical chug, groove and thrash riffing that infects most symfo acts. All tracks possess an identity of their own and have recognizable traits but don’t treat beyond the established paths of this subgenre. On the whole “Vinum Intus” is record that stays within the expected perimeter with a gaze towards more underground sensibilities that sink beyond the surface. The musicianship is good, but not very exceptional. All cuts are fairly straightforward, not too complex in structure and the midpaced tempo doesn’t force any of the music upon the listener. There isn’t a whole lot to offend the novice or experience listener, yet there’s also precious little that makes this unit stand out from the global competition. Overall “Vinum Intus” is a serviceable genre record but hardly a mandatory purchase. Alghazanth’s established fanbase will like this, others might find this of cursory and passing interest.
