For clarity’s sake classified as progressive death metal Ana Kefr are an impressive amalgation of styles and influences. In that sense they are similar to Oblomov, who also combine extreme metal with an avant-garde mindset and ethnic instrumentation. Ana Kefr uses a variety of instruments including saxophone, clarinet, a stand-up bass, a piano and even a rattlesnake’s rattle in ‘Thaumatrope’, which add a folk atmosphere. Occassionally a few tasteful female vocals colour up the proceedings. The prevalent ethnic atmosphere and mountainman vocals remind of American folk metallers Nechochwen and in lesser degree tribal metallers Neurosis. The lyrics alternate between Arabic and English passages. Ana Kefr’s ambitious songcraft does remind of “Spheres” era Pestilence in the sense that both break confidently with established genre motifs and structures in favor for something all the more unique, malevolent and powerful. Ana Kefr’s music isn’t about instant gratification, but rewards the patient listener who takes the time to let it all sink in and absorb this band’s various inspirations and influences. Combining folk metal elements with more technical forms of extreme metal Ana Kefr are a light of promise in a genre oversaturated with acts masturbating in technical wankery and forgetting to write songs. It is good to see a different type extreme metal band hailing from the ever-fertile grounds of California.
