If there’s one genre more maligned than underground slam – and deathcore it must be contemporary metalcore. Where metalcore was once a genre comprised of angry, hateful and metallic hardcore acts (Cro-Mags, Earth Crisis, Integrity, Starkweather) that spewed frustration, discontent and hostility towards society at large and the government in specific; the genre has now been relegated to the kids rubric - by the kids for the kids. This band from France falls squarely into the contemporary category and is a shining example of exactly how a once deemed promising genre has devolved into parody. Much like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, Poison the Well, Shadows Fall and Trivium – this act combines shouted vocals with Swedish melo-death guitar work, heartfelt choruses, acoustics and electronics with angsty tweenage lyrical content along with the genre-specific breakdowns. Objectively speaking, this is an adequate product for the genre it represents, but functionality does not equal formidability. This record and, by extent, this act does not add anything of note to the established motifs of this genre. Worse yet, it slavishly copies what American pioneers have done many years prior. There isn’t anything remotely innovative or original about “Back to Reality” as it is specifically tailored to reach an as wide and diverse audience as possible, this means that any sort of threat or intensity has been excised. The squeaky clean production further hampers any sort of listener investment in the record, as everything is so pristinely clean that the lack of spirit becomes all the more apparent. For all intents and purposes, All Dogmas We Hate clearly knows which audience they want to cater to, the Hot Topic audience. All the more reason for them to do so and leave extreme metal to those who deserve it. Effimate metalcore is the nu-metal of the 2000’s and like that genre it should be avoided when possible. When did extreme metal become so effimate, sugary and fruity – and why aren’t we more up in arms about this staggering development?
