Finnish militant thrashers Axegressor debuted in 2009 with “Command”, a serviceable throwback record to the genre sound of ‘80s. Now, two years later, the band is a back for another round of violent on death metal-bordering thrash. Much like contemporaries Evile, Nocturnal Fear, Revocation, Warbringer and the likes these Finns are mostly inspired by the Bay Area sound (Exodus, Metallica, Slayer, Testament) and the classic German thrash institutions such as Destruction, Kreator and Sodom. The throaty shouted vocals of Jussi “Johnny Nuclear Winter” Helenius are almost punk/hardcore-ish in delivery, while the rest of the band plays mostly straightforward, no-frills thrash with little in terms of complexity or musical ambition. As with “Command” the dynamics are blunt and head-on. Little effort is made to make these cuts more than callbacks to the bands various inspirations and influences. What Axegressor do is hardly of note as every label, big and small, these days carries their own retro-thrash act to capitalize in to the trend of the day and age. There’s little that makes Axegressor stand out from the competition, their militaristic concept isn’t explored to any meaningful depth, while their assault is fittingly brutal, it is not exceedingly so in that it becomes an identifying trait. Overall, Axegressor is another retro-thrash metal act in a scene already oversaturated with tribute bands and pretenders to the throne. Once the retro-thrash craze dies down, we’ll be able to see Axegressor’s true merit and worth.
