It’s strange seeing Norwegian death metallers Blood Red Throne on Sevared Records after stints on Hammerheart - and Earache Records. Upon closer inspection the match is a suitable fit, although hardly for the right reasons. Since their last record “Souls Of Damnation” everybody from the last line-up has moved on, leaving only co-founder Daniel “Dod” Olaisen as a sole remnant of this band’s fairly accomplished and moderately successful past, backed by two new members with no relevant past experience worth mentioning. Gone is primary songsmith/guitarist Terje Vik “Tchort” Schei (ex-Emperor) and bassist extraordinaire Erlend Caspersen, the band’s one identifying and truly memorable factor. With the band’s assets now gone Blood Red Throne has exactly become the type band that Sevared Records has made an industry of signing and releasing; an underground unit that copies the sound of a bigger, much more established outfit, but within the budgetary constraints and genre perimeters that this label has capitalized upon in recent years. “Brutalitarian Regime” (that’s not a brutal title, but a moronic one) is therefore a suitable underground death metal record, as a Blood Red Throne album it is a complete failure. While Dod is a serviceable guitarist and songwriter, the combination with Caspersen’s exotic funky bass lines, Tchort’s riff – and songcraft was integral to this band’s success and the very thing that exemplified their existance. With these elements now out of the equation this band can no longer be truly considered Blood Red Throne. “Brutalitarian Regime” is an exercise in the mundane and the futile, while people uncognizant of the band’s earlier output might find this impressive, for those of us who were with this band from the beginning this record is but a mere shadow of what this ravenous war machine once was. Who will claim this throne?
