On their 2008 debut “Perverted Surgical Concept” Russian deathsters Cephalic Impurity sounded like a dime-a-dozen underground slam-death act, of which there are too many already. “Unique Brute Revival”, their second record for SFC Records, sees them adopting a far more technical and cultured take on the death metal sound. Reminiscent of “Despise the Sun” era Suffocation and “Winds Of Creation” era Decapitated the band seems to have shed most of what made their preceding album a tired and tiring affair. The song structures are better thought out, the riffs have actual function and the drumming is a lot more tasteful and restrained. The bass work is commendable, but mirrors the guitars a bit too much still. This isn’t quite as over-the-top as the typical Polish band nor as viscerally intense as any of the US institutions of this genre, but as a mix of two different subgenres, they are amongst the better units. There isn’t anything remotely original about “Unique Brute Revival” – but at least it proves that there still are bands which are able to look beyond their direct inspirations. The lack of interesting guitar leads/solos and some creeping influences of their slam past occasionally rear their ugly head still keep this band away from growing higher in the echelons of the genre. While sounding unfocused at times, overall Cephalic Impurity has undergone a laudable transformation. Given that they aren’t afraid to embrace their blooming songcraft, integrate some face-melting leads/solos and further adopt a pure death metal mindset their music can only get better.
