Damngod is the death/groove project of former Before the Dawn members Mika Ojala (vocals, guitars) and Toni Broman (bass). In the bandphotos Damngod project the image of gun-toting, beer swilling American rednecks and cowboys. The bellowed vocals are quite hardcore-ish. There are some similarities to countrymen Survivors Zero in the sense that both bands have a basis of no-frills death metal and both units tend to go into the genre’s more melodic territory without sounding sugary. Of the two Survivors Zero is the most mature, in both concept as well as music. Damngod is obviously meant to be a fun project and don’t take themselves too seriously. With songtitles like ‘Father Of the Year’, ‘Feeling Bad Never Felt So Good’ or ‘Brother n° 1’ it’s clear that Damngod are in this for the fun, delivering a serious message was never their intention. This isn’t exactly high art and Damngod are doing no effort to dispel that notion. There’s a clear influence from early punk/hardcore in the riffs, song structures and chord progressions. Everything is kept quite basic, only the occasional guitar lead/solo will hint at this unit’s technical skill. There’s isn’t too much diversity present on this record as this is obviously a band to experience in the live arena. The logotype is similar to that of classic Entombed and while this is clearly based upon melodic Finnish death metal the spirit of post-“Cowboys From Hell” Pantera looms over this unit and their music. “Humanity” is a fun platter of melodic death/groove metal that will appeal to fans of Pantera, Machine Head and similar acts who don’t mind some Finnish melodies with their grooves.
