    Surreal Overdose ()

After a slew of demos they released their debut “Luck Of the Corpse” in 1991 and each subsequent full length became a cult item in its own right. As always Deceased base their albums on the macabre, the supernatural and the surreal – in that sense this album is no different. “Surreal Overdose” is the first batch of new material since 2005’s “As the Weird Travel On”. King Fowley’s inimitable vocals and drumming are both in fine form as he’s probably the most recognizable vocalist/drummer besides Autopsy’s Chris Reifert. His throaty thrash vocals are clearly understandable as his pronunciation is a lot better than the majority of today’s bland death metal growlers. In a clear nod to their legendary debut “Surreal Overdose” is probably the fastest Deceased record to date, while the NWOBHM leads/solos and harmonies hark to their output at the dawn of the millennium, specifically 2000’s “Supernatural Addiction”. The bass guitar features prominently in the production and actively adds to the compositions, unlike a lot of current bands that tend to bury it as deep as possible. ‘A Doom-Laden Aura’ is a strikingly fragile sounding guitar interlude. ”. It becomes clear that Deceased is an old ambassador of the scene as technical skill, dynamics and brutality here work in function of the songs and not the other way around, as with many contemporary acts. At no point does anything sounds forced or obligatory and each song has a recognizable hook making it instantly memorable. Everything has it purpose and serve to strengthen the songs. Deceased prove that even after two decades on the scene they are as vital and relevant to it as ever.
