Whenever famed metal musicians tire of the genre they helped define, they generally tend to dabble in various forms of rock side-projects. Somehow labels continue to believe that there’s an audience for these side-projects. The latest within this product line is Swedish act Doomdogs. As the name suggests this band plays stoner rock and within its ranks this act is featuring former Grotesque (pre-At the Gates) drummer Tomas Eriksson on vocals and otherwise humble unknowns. As expected are influences from Black Sabbath, High On Fire, Kyuss, Queens Of the Stone Age (arguably the most popular export of the genre in recent times) and Sleep are never far away. Despite hailing from frosty Sweden these men manage to replicate a vibrant, smoked out and psychedelic ‘70s feeling and that barren desert atmosphere all the classic stoner acts heed to. As records of this kind call for the prevalent feeling is that of laid backness, gentle acoustics, pulsating grooves and slow dynamics that do not strain the listener. Eriksson has enough range and his vocals go from chants to throaty shouts and more spoken passages, overall they are reminiscent of that other (now defunct) Swedish stoner act Blind Dog. But like so many projects of this ilk this is only of interest to those who are fans of the membership, as there’s plenty of plainly better and readily available genre platters to be found in the mainstream and popular channels of music. As such Doomdogs aren’t in any way vital to this particular subgenre, “Unleash the Truth” is a serviceable rock record, but it isn’t going to chart the top 40 anytime soon. As such it is laudable that Doomentia see this fit for release in a time of dwindling record sales and general malaise in the record industry.
