    Lady Of Shalott (ep)

One man, Miguel Santos, is a veritable industry on his own. Besides heading up the death/doom unit In Peccatum he also is the creative force behind this lighter and much more romantic entity that co-exists with his main band, thus was born A Dream Of Poe. “The Lady of Shalott” is a Victorian ballad by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892). Like his other early poems – “Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere” and “Galahad” – the poem recasts Arthurian subject matter loosely based on medieval sources. This EP starts off with two different versions of the title track. One being the original unedited form, the second is a shorter cut version, tactfully named ‘short version’ as to not confuse the easily distracted or mentally unfit. The band’s biggest forte remains their combination of soaring clean vocals with harsh grunts, which in itself isn’t terribly new or original, but A Dream Of Poe manage to make sound fresh and exciting again. Where In Peccatum is perhaps the most brutal of the two acts A Dream Of Poe is the more classically inspired. Still both acts are heavily indebted to “The Angel and the Dark River” and “Like Gods Of the Sun”-era My Dying Bride, as the riffs, song structure and chord progressions clearly show. The contrasting vocal styles add a lot of emotional depth as Joao Melo is one of the better singers within the underground regions of this genre. His soaring vocals obviously are no match to the likes of Rob Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus) or Messiah Marcolin (ex-Candlemass) in terms of timbre, phrasing or range – but they add a lot of character to A Dream Of Poe’s clearly British inspired take on the genre.
