After 17 years of releasing EPs and demos this violent death/black metal act from Juarez, Mexico now debuts on Hells Headbangers, their ideal partner in depravity. This sounds awfully lot like the bastard lovechild of Mexico’s own Disgorge, “Morbid Visions” era Sepultura combined with the sense of dread and screechy vocals that remind of that other obscure but highly regarded Mexican death metal act, Cenotaph, when it was fronted by Daniel Corchado (The Chasm, ex-Incantation). Much like Singapore’s Impiety, Colombia’s Horncrowned or Brazil’s Mental Horror the number one objective of Embalmed is to beat the listener into submissioin by sheer unrelenting speed and headcrushing brutality. There is nothing subtle about Embalmed, the sheer force, endurance and dexterity that these men display is laudable, yet actual songs would be even more appreciated. “Exalt the Imperial Beast” is an album that never lets up, foregoing variation, tempo changes and general dynamics in favor of all all-out maelstrom of blasts, fleshripping riffs and depraved semi-black metal rasps. Despite these shortcomings this record manages to sound both rabidly intense as well as thoroughly depraved and morbidly dark, something which most acts miss these days.
