Epidemic Scorn is a German death metal band that has been around since 2004 and with “Basement Art” is releasing its third album. On this album they present a down to basics form of groove death, inspired in equal amounts by (early) Dying Fetus and (early) Six Feet Under. There’s a light Swedish undercurrent in the riffing and the leads/solos are definitely well done, but by and large, this is rather standard and fairly non-descript death metal. Epidemic Scorn has remained unknown for a reason and “Basement Art” isn’t going to change that. Despite a good amount of grooves, breakdowns and blast sections their assault possesses little to no individuality beyond the peripheral Swedish stylings and some minor black metal leanings in the blast sections. The leads/solos and harmonies definitely stand out in comparison to the rest of the package, which is functional at best. Epidemic Scorn won’t win any prices for originality and even though the execution of their chosen style leaves little to be desired, there’s nothing about this band that stands out in any remarkable way. The song structures are fairly predictable and aside from a few start-stop sections little will be of interest beyond those of the band’s immediate local fanbase. It will be still some time before Epidemic Scorn is ready to measure itself with any of the established international genre institutions, even as a small-time demo band “Basement Art” isn’t all that special. Compared to established German death metal bands such as Anasarca, Deadborn, Necrophagist, Obscura, Pavor or Resurrected this band is still in its infancy.
