Funerus are one of the original death metal acts from Pennsylvania, who formed in 1990 and have a solid history in the local scene but split before anything of note could transpire. Original vocalist/guitarist Brad Heiple rejoined for the band’s 2003 debut “Festering Earth” along mainstay Jill Daily (bass) with session musicians John McEntee (guitars) and Kyle Severn (drums), both of scene monument Incantation. Now 8 long years later Funerus releases its second disc “Reduced to Sludge”. Their debut was an ominous mix of midpaced death metal in the vein of Entombed’s “Left Hand Path”, early Obituary, Grave and Bolt Thrower. “Reduced to Sludge” follows closely in these footsteps. Jill and John share vocal duties since Heiple bowed out and replacing Severn on drums is the illustrious Sam Inzerra (Morpheus Descends, Mortician). What Funerus have in abundance is atmosphere. The feeling of gloom and dread that permeated the death metal records of the early-to-mid ‘90s is present here in unreal degrees and oozes from the pores of this band. Jill’s snarling barks remind of Corinne Van der Brand, frontwoman of early Dutch death metal act Acrostichon. McEntee is his usual slithering self, delivering gruff growls on par with any of Incantation’s frontmen. It’s good to hear more bands (both original and new) returning to these simpler, much more darker times of the genre. Above all death metal should sound dark, hateful and sadistic. Funerus prove once again that the original acts remain unmatched and unsurpassed.
