There’s more to Finland than black -, death – and gothic/symfo metal. Grotesque Gallery is an industrial/electronic metal act that aims clearly not at a conventional metal audience. ‘Noverno’ is a rather amateurish semi-gothic cut with the most basic of riffs this side of later-day Nightwish, piano lines, a predictable point-counterpoint structure within the structure of an industrial framework, including a directionless drumbeat. The multitude of badly performed vocals are equal in wretchedness. The second track starts off with electronics and is something you’d expect to hear on a Rammstein or Marilyn Manson rehearsal. The electronic drums sound somewhat similar to Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Head Like A Hole’, although they clearly are not that creative and convincing. The track is broken up by some relatively okay sound effects, but it is nothing truly remarkable. ‘Allegory’ kicks off with more ominous ambient effects, but this is quickly ruined by circus like synthesizers, amateurish drumming and more godawful vocals. The fourth track starts out with deformed, computerized vocals and is the strangest and most experimental track on the record. This is perhaps the only track worth hearing, as expected it is also the least developed and its blooming ideas are too quickly abandoned in favor of pandering to the lowest common denominator. The artwork was obviously inspired by the Expressionist painting ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch. The military font seems an odd choice and the print quality isn’t exactly the best either. It seems every aspect of this product’s presentation was shortchanged or just plainly mishandled. It’s unclear which audience Grotesque Gallery attempt to appeal to, as for mainstream terms it is too dark, for gothic terms it is too industrial and for industrial standards the terribly misguided semi-grunts and screams don’t hold a lot of appeal. As a dedicated industrial demo band Grotesque Gallery could build in a modest career in their native Finland. Outside of their home region nobody in the right mind is waiting for another crude rehash of things Atari Teenage Riot, Frontline Assembly, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails did more convincing well over more than a decade ago.
