Hungarian death metal act Gutted has been around since 1996 under the Genocide moniker, but changed name fairly recently. With their bandname taken from the 1992 Cannibal Corpse album “Butchered at Birth”, you’d logically expect them to opt for a similar musical direction, this isn’t the case here. Instead this is something you’d expect to hear on Unique Leader (on their lesser days) and Comatose Music. This is the band’s third offering under their current moniker. Obvious inspirations are the first two Krisiun records and Pessimist’s “Slaughtering the Faithful”, albeit without the Slayer edges. These are seasoned players as the delivery and execution is more exemplary. The vocals lack the oomph, venom and bite you’d expect in death metal. Gutted don’t waste much time with whistles and bells, but thankfully the tracks contain a number of tasteful guitar leads/solos, something that was part of the classic death metal sound of the ‘90s, but became somewhat of a lost art at the dawn of the new millennium. Gutted is hardly the second coming of death metal, though. While the music is expertly crafted and tightly delivered, there’s no soul or heart here. Everything sounds calculated for maximum impact yet there’s no atmosphere to speak of. Once upon a time death metal sounded hateful, dark and sadistic – none of which Gutted manage to translate or implement into their assault. Tech heads will probably enjoy this record regardless of its lack of creativity, vitality or passion, yet the more discerning listener will discover nothing that hasn’t been done before years prior. There’s only so much you can do within this genre, before it all starts to sound alike. A good record, but far from a vital or mandatory one.
