The doom metal scene is alive and kicking in Portugal it seems. After the commendable A Dream Of Poe Ukrainian label Arx Productions further capitalizes on this pool of talent with the release of Insaniae, a female fronted doom act in the tradition of (early) Theater Of Tragedy and bands of similar form. The angelic vocals of Isabel Cristina hold the middleground between Julie Kiss (To-Mera), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) and Liv Kristine’s less overbearing moments. Cristina’s vocals are never operatic but her range is surprisingly wide. Much like the Norwegian pioneers Insaniae alternate grunts with soaring female vocals, adhering to the classic beauty-and-the-beast template while retaining a musical package not unlike My Dying Bride’s “The Angel and the Dark River”. The tempo is midpaced to slow with enough interesting drum fills, riffs and funky bass lines to keep things interesting and afloat. For the majority of its duration this record follows the guideline set out by the early UK pioneers of this genre (Anathema, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost) and Insaniae don’t stray too far from the formula. The music is accessible enough for novice listener while being brutal and dark enough for more experienced fans of this genre. Insaniae will never wander into funeral doom or drone territory, but the occasional slow section will surely appeal to fans who like their doom more unforgiving and brooding. This isn’t the darkest that the doom spectrum has to offer, nor is it the most romantic, instead Insaniae much like their vocal styles occupy the midst between the two subgenres. Nevertheless, Insaniae is an interesting addition to the female fronted doom movement. Fans of Rituals Of the Oak might find this interesting.
